Episode 417 – Stop Working 15 Hours a Day and NOT Making any Money!

Owners of cleaning companies are some of the most passionate people around, which is one of the many reasons Mike loves what he does so much. Passion is great, but sometimes when people get too passionate about their company, they can start to forget about themselves. This can lead to burnout, which can start affecting how you run your company. It’s important to keep a strong balance between your personal and work life, and lucky for you, Mike has you covered.

As always, we’re going to start at the foundation. The biggest misconception that people have is that more work automatically equals growth. It may seem feasible in the beginning, but you’ll quickly find that it’s not scalable. It’s always a much better idea to work on your business, rather than in it. The reality isn’t working more hours to make more money, but rather if you bring value to the world, the more money you can make. Instead of focusing on how many more hours you can spend working in your business, you should be working on systems that handle the lower tier work, so that you can focus on the things that are a higher priority. Cleaning, admin work, buying supplies etc. are always going to be $10 or $20 an hour jobs. Instead of focusing on how many more hours that you can dedicate to those types of things, your time would be much better spent focusing on bringing your clients real value. Things such as building communities, systems, and processes that make your clients lives better is much more valuable.

Another false idea is that your company needs your attention at all times. If you find yourself working 15+ hour days on a consistent basis, then you can’t be the leader that your company needs. Working this much leads to burnout, which can make you much less effective. One of the tricks that Mike used to use to circumvent this, is boxing his time. He had certain times of day that he would focus on different things. For instance, he would set a specific time each day when his employees could get a hold of him. This helps not only save you time but can also help your employees grow into stronger people as well. On top of that it helps you make sure that you’re spending your work time working, and your family/friends/alone time not having to be constantly stressing out about how your business is doing.

One of the great ways to help your employees grow to this level, is by making sure that your employees are a core value match. Mike always told his employees that he would never get upset over a mistake if they could explain their reasoning per his core values. This is a great baseline so your employees know what is expected of them, as well as how to handle different situations.
