Episode 1143 – Should You Always Be Hiring?
Join Our Live Q&A
Every Wednesday, Mike Campion and the Grow My Cleaning Company team record a live Facebook Q&A session. Join our free Facebook group by searching “Grow My Cleaning Company” on Facebook or visit growmycleaningcompany.com to participate. This week’s theme is hiring, as we continue addressing your questions.
When to Start Hiring
Cynthia asked about the best time to start hiring and what to pay. Mike explained that waiting until you need someone to start hiring is a mistake. It can take weeks to find, train, and onboard new employees. The best time to start hiring is right now. Even if you don’t have clients yet, keep your hiring funnel active. Pay rates vary by location, but Mike advises paying 10-25% above the average wage in your area, with a 15% performance-based bonus.
Handling Slow Business
Raina’s question highlighted a common dilemma: having great potential employees but not enough business. Mike emphasized the importance of a continuous hiring funnel. Always be honest with your applicants about the hours you can offer. If you don’t have full-time work, offer part-time or “floater” positions. Also, ensure your client attraction funnel is always bringing in new clients.
Dealing with Sick Employees
Len asked about managing when employees call in sick. Mike pointed out that being understaffed is a common issue. If one person calling out disrupts your business, you need more staff. Implement a hiring funnel and set clear policies for excused and unexcused absences. Have enough team members to cover any absences without overworking yourself or canceling client appointments.
Finding Reliable Employees
Sandra asked how to find reliable employees and weed out the bad ones. Mike shared the importance of having a strong hiring system. Grow My Cleaning Company uses a three-step hiring process: group interview, one-on-one interview, and working interview. This process, combined with core values like “have fun, make money, be real, help out,” ensures you hire the right people. Consistency in your hiring and training systems is key to building a dependable team.
