Episode 727 – How to Stepping Out of Cleaning as a Win-Win for Everyone
Welcome to the podcast Cleaning Nation! Today, we have Deanna Jennings of “Totally Clean”. Deanna started her company in January of 2019. Deanna wants coaching on how she can hire employees that have longevity and do as good of a job cleaning as she does. She worries they aren’t being properly trained because she herself is so busy cleaning. Listen in as Mike gives some sage advice on how to get out of our own way and trust that others can add just as much if not more valuable to the company we are building.
You Aren’t The Only Magical Cleaning Unicorn
Sometimes when we are still in the thick of cleaning, it can be really hard to let go of that ownership. We convince ourselves that we have built a brand based only on our ability to clean and clean well. Hiring others is only so we don’t drown, but their value isn’t as high as ours because they can’t clean like us. But is that really true? And how are we hurting ourselves by putting thoughts like that out into the universe? For one, we are projecting a lot to those who we do hire. Making them feel like they can never be as good as us. In fact, we don’t even have time to train them well because we are out being the face of the brand, doing the best quality work. Once we can step back and realize that what we are doing can be taught, we free not only ourselves but also our employees to stay in our own lanes and rise to our highest potential.
Enter Mindset
Mike was confronted with a similar issue when he started Grow My Cleaning Company. He thought he was the best and only option as a coach. He thought if he let other people coach, they weren’t going to do it like him. They were going to mess it up. Finally, he realized that while he is a great coach, he’s not as skilled at mindset work. So he hired a mindset coach, That freed him up to grow his company in other ways, just like it will free you to grow your cleaning company when you can trust that someone else can do the cleaning for you and do it well.
Know What They Want so They Don’t Have to, Then GIve it to Them
Sometimes, the way well sell potential clients is that they can have the highest level of cleaning for the most reasonable price. But that’s kind of setting them up to be let down. It’s also, at the end of the day, not what they want. What they want is to know that you are going to show up on time, be responsible, insured, a nice person, trustworthy etc. They don’t want to have to worry about any of that. They want you to take away a stressor in your life, not add stress. If you are accomplishing that, perfect. Approach it in a way that you can show how you are solving a problem for them and everyone will be happy.
Frame Stepping Out of Cleaning as a Win-Win for Everyone
When it comes to stepping out of cleaning and running your business, you have two options. Either you can approach clients in an apologetic way “I’m sorry, but I’m not going to be cleaning for you anymore. I have this other person who is pretty good. Hopefully, you’ll like them ok.” They’ll be like, ‘ bummer, I like you. I don’t want things to change.’ If you reframe it and say something like, ‘hey, I want this to be a real business where if I get sick or have an issue, you don’t have to wait until I can show up again to get your house cleaned. I have trained an amazing team who is going to take great care of you, I’m excited about this transition.’ the whole energy will be different. Now, they’re going to be excited about the consistency you can promise them.
Final Takeaway
The way you frame any change you make in your business will make all the difference in the positive traction it has towards real change.
