Episode 612 – How to Bring More Cleaning Clients to You Instead of Chasing Them

MIKE: Hey Cleaning Nation! Today I have the lovely Miranda Karr Paepke, owner of Miraspen Blinds & Cleaning. She started the business because she was tired of working for “the man” and wanted to be “the man”. Before we dive into the business stuff Miranda, tell us a fun fact about you.

MIRANDA: Well, I have an entire room dedicated to my plants.

MIKE: So what made you decide to make a plant room?

MIRANDA: I found a group on Facebook where people traded plants and I just got carried away! Soon I had an entire room of plants!

MIKE: You are going to have to tell me how to keep my plants alive because they don’t do very well around here. So let’s dive into your top questions for today.

MIRANDA: I do a lot of door-to-door sales, cold calling, and handing out flyers. It gets me some customers but I find that only 1 out of 100 people might call. So how can I bring more people to me instead of me trying to find them?

MIKE: There are two big switches we need to make. So one thing I want to ask you is that if I came to you and said “I’ve coached thousands of people, made websites, coached soccer, can coach your employees, or even clean” would you be confident in my ability to coach you?

MIRANDA: I would think you are either good at everything or have a big ego.

MIKE: Which of those is most likely?

MIRANDA: Most likely it would be that you have an inflated view of yourself.

MIKE: So what if I came to you and said “I’ve been coaching owners of cleaning companies for 6 years, seen thousands of lives changed, helped people get out cleaning, and this is all I do every day.” Would you be confident in my ability to help you?

MIRANDA: That sounds way better.

MIKE: So when you go to your clients and say “I clean car dealerships, condos, gutter cleaning, office cleaning, window cleaning, roof cleaning, carpets, etc.” you are going to have a very tough time finding clients because people will believe that you aren’t very good at anything. So the first thing we would need to do is find a single niche that you are very good at. This will help people view you as an expert in that field. Trying to be everything for everybody is a great way to be nothing to nobody. For example, if I was looking for a date and went and asked married women I am probably not going to have a lot of luck right? So the first thing is to get very clear on what you want to serve and what your clients want. The second step is to set up systems and processes to attract as opposed to chase. The last thing is to get the message to them. What is one more question you have for me?

Miranda: I am never really sure what to say on my business page so what would you suggest for me?

MIKE: What I hear Miranda saying is that “hey, I don’t know how to reach people on my Facebook or if people will even care what I have to say”. She also said “I have your videos and podcasts”. We found out what people wanted and I created content that would serve them. People were excited to come to our page and hear what I have to say. Before you go live, find out who you want to attract first and be very specific.
