Mike has found cleaning company owners to be some of the most passionate business owners and with that can sometimes come burnout. Many people look at vacations as non-necessary, however, if you don’t give yourself time to reset, it can quickly lead to burnout and start to make you less efficient when you are working. On top of that, it is your company, and when most people start their companies they do so with time and money freedom in mind, not too many people start a company with the intention of just giving themselves another job with more responsibilities and less freedom. That is why today Mike is here to talk to you all about the importance of vacations, and giving yourself time to rejuvenate.

We’re going to switch up the format of this blog today, normally we start at the foundation and work our way up, but with this, I’d like to start out with the most important concept. If you only take one thing away from this entire blog, let it be this: ‘You are not here to serve your business, it is here to serve you.’ Mike himself has been a slave to many of his business’ in the past and seen first hand just how detrimental it can be to your personal life, which in turn will start to creep into your business life. It’s important to remember that you started your company to serve you, and the moment you find yourself in the position where you’re a slave to it, it’s time to either let go of it, or re-invent it.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that you need to make sure your vacations are actual vacations. The reality of the situation is that most humans need a day or two just to decompress. If you’re taking a vacation that is short, and the whole time you are super stressed out about what’s going on in your company, you’re not going to get any of the benefits of actually going on vacation. Similar to a nap,  a two or three-day break is great, but you’ll still need a proper vacation in order to fully reset yourself.

It is also important to keep in mind that a vacation does not mean getting your work done from a different location. When you take a vacation it’s important to keep a balance between your work and vacation. Whether that means doing absolutely no work or setting a small amount of time aside in the morning to get a few things done, it’s important to find that balance. It’s important that you have the systems in place so that you know that your company will run fine without you having to check into it constantly. You need to be able to work ON your business and not IN it.
