Episode 772 – Getting to the Heart of What You Want

Welcome to the podcast Cleaning Nation! Today, we have Toufik Zaim of Spot Cleaners. He started his business in November 2020 in Toledo, Ohio. Listen in today as he talks to Toufik about 1099 vs w2 employees and when to make the switch, and then they start to dive in deeper to what’s really holding Toufik back from growing his company to what he hopes it will be. This podcast is really interesting because, no matter what the surface questions are, so often what’s underneath is really the heart of the question.

When to Switch from 1099 to W2

This is a really common question and one that’s easy to get caught up in. There’s not always a clear-cut answer, a lot of it depends on what you want to take on as the employer. There are pros and cons to both. You are going to be paying more for a w2 employee but there is more risk for you if you keep your employees as 1099 contracted workers. You are trusting that they are going to pay for their own worker’s comp insurance, etc. and it’s just overall more of a risk. Mike suggests always having your employees be w2 because it’s lower risk.

A Common Mistake

As Mike goes deeper with Toufik, he starts to ask him what is the one big barrier to you having the life you want, the business you want, etc. and Tourik says he feels like he’s not using his time effectively because he has to go back after a lot of his cleaners to keep things up to the standards he’s promised his clients. Mike explains that though that is an issue, it’s not THEE issue. That it’s really easy to spin in smaller problems or in indecision rather than having the tough conversations about what are we ultimately trying to accomplish in the first place.

Core Values is the Key to Getting the Results You Want

Ultimately, as Toufik voices his frustrations, so much of what he’s looking for- employees he can count on that are committed and take pride in their work along with a culture where people want to work-comes from hiring from a core value standpoint. If you are hiring someone who is a core value match with you, it doesn’t matter if they’ve never cleaned before in their life. You are going to see eye to eye on the ultimate goal of your company, and you are going to make it happen together. It will be much more effortless and much less dramatic when you find people who are on the same page as you. It’s why hiring with a set of core values is so essential.

Final Takeaway: Get clear on what you want, ask the right questions so that your answers can get you closer to the life you want.
