Episode 492 – Employees or Customers? Which Comes First?

Today we’re going to discuss a problem that we hear REPEATEDLY at Grow My Cleaning Company: You can’t get more customers without hiring employees but how do you hire employees without work for them to do? This problem prevents growth, scalability, the ability to remove yourself from the business – in other words – your VISION! We’re gonna dive in today to solve this problem once and for all.

False Belief: If I “can’t handle” customers or employees, I shouldn’t advertise for them.

If you need an employee or customer TODAY,  the best time to advertise for them is weeks or months ago. The problem is that so many of us are reactive. If we don’t have systems in place, we just hustle, hustle, hustle. We tend to put down all the work we do for customers then hustle to hire employees and vice versa. You MUST build a pipeline of always having potential clients and customers.

False Belief: It’s “immoral” to advertise for customers or employees when I don’t know where I will put them or if I can take them.

There are two points here to counteract this belief.

1. You’re actually hiring for 2-3 weeks in the future. You don’t know what the future holds – you don’t know what jobs you’ll have open in the next few weeks. What you need  is a system for people to know, like, and trust you. When the timing is right you will be able to find a fit because people are already familiar with you. This is your pipeline.

2. There is NOTHING wrong with telling a customer or employee you aren’t a right fit at this moment. Far better to have and not need than need and not have.

False Belief: If I get customers or employees I can’t handle, I have to say yes.

The truth is, you aren’t obligated to take on ANY customers OR employees.  If you don’t feel like it’s the right time or if you can’t onboard them, train them, etc – it’s totally okay for you to tell them they’re not a fit.

False Belief: When I run low on employees or customers, it’s time to start advertising.

That puts all of the pressure on YOU. Like we mentioned before, you need to start advertising 2-3 weeks before you are low on employees. You need SYSTEMS that are ALWAYS working (even when you are not) to serve you 24/7!

False Belief: It has to be a HUGE amount of time and work to hire.

It IS a huge amount of work. Either YOU do it to the best of your limited ability OR you have SYSTEMS in place that SCALE. The systems make sure the hiring gets done no matter what, leaving you to be the visionary entrepreneur.  Oftentimes, when we do all the work of hiring, it requires us to work full time and gets frustrating. You need to make the mindset shift from “my job as the owner is to hire”,  to “my job as the owner is to have systems that work so” that you have a pipeline of potential customers and employees.

False Belief: I have to chase customers and employees.

When you have client and employee attraction systems ALWAYS at work, they chase you!

The minute you have more money coming in than you need, you are retired. The minute you have more clients and employees coming in than you can accept, you have a REAL automated business!

Once you get this RIGHT, you can scale as big as you want and the business doesn’t depend on YOU.
