Episode 245 – Deciding on Commercial, Residential or Both
Commercial vs. Residential – Which is Easier to Create a 7 Figure Cleaning Company?
Today, we are joined by Ken Ellis from Grace’s Cleaning company. It’s an interesting conversation we dive into, one that many cleaning company owners SHOULD look at doing but just don’t.
And that is finding a niche. A specialized niche makes your company able to grow much faster, be considered experts in your field, and in general allows you to take opportunities that just are not offered for a generalist cleaning company.
It is importnt to remember you’re not in the “cleaning” business. You’re in the niche you choose for yourself. For example look at myself, I’m a business coach that teaches eople specificall how to grow their cleaning companies.
Why?
I could had chosen to consult construction and manufacturing companies, both which typically have more money to spend on services like mine. Yet, I chose cleaning companies because I saw a niche here that no one was really tackling. Because of me taking this specialization, I’m now a little bit of a mini-celebrity within the niche whenever I go to industry events and new and exciting opportunities are opened up to me because of that.
You can do the same thing when you choose a niche for your company.
Obviously, the main two big niches for cleaning companies is going to be residential and commercial. So which one should you do?

Residential Versus Commercial Cleaning Jobs – Which is Better?
The truth is… NEITHER are better than the other. It all depends on what your goals are. If you are money motivated, commercial will probably be the better option as I have seen zero 7-figure cleaning companies in the residential space unless they started a franchise model. Even with a franchise model though, that is more often a 10 year plan for them rather than a quick growth model that a money motivated entrepreneur is probably looking for.

The thing with a residential focused is that it is a bit better lifestyle wise, or can be. Typically, you’re working Monday through Friday, 8pm to 5pm, normal office hours with weekends off. When it comes to commercial cleaning jobs, they can often be 7 days per week and you’re looking at hours in the 5pm-8pm for your workers to get in ad get the job done.
If your goals are more lifestyle oriented, I would say residential is probably going be the better route for you. If you are looking to build a legacy company you can pass down to your children making significant annual revenue with entire fleets of employees though… then commercial is definitely the route you should take.
