Why having a niche is important for your cleaning business

How to choose a niche, what to do with it, and why a niche is important to your clients

Today we are speaking with Wale Oyekanmi owner of DW cleaning which has served the Nigeria area since 2015. The name of the business ‘DW’ is an acronym that comes from Wale and his wife Deborah’s first letters of their first names. DW Cleaning currently has 25 employees focusing on commercial, janitorial and post construction cleaning services.

RESOURCE ALERT: Why is a niche so vital?https://www.growmycleaningcompany.com/cleaning-service-marketing-plan/

Because Nigeria has a surplus of cleaning businesses, Wale is having trouble with branding and standing out while being in the start-up stage of his business. Mike also shares different marketing techniques and strategies to ensure that you succeed in the business.

Choose a niche

The way that you stand out especially as a startup or when you’re a small company is to come up with a particular niche; it is impossible to stand out if you are everything to everyone. Potential clients are looking for a cleaning service that can specialize in their specific pain and solve it for them. This goes for all cleaning companies around the world whether the cleaning industry where you provide service is widely popular or not. You will not be successful if you try selling to everyone, you must choose the specific type of customer you want your business to serve and put all of your focus into becoming an expert in that niche.

RESOURCE ALERT: How to market after you have chosen your nichehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EkHwiU8JsQ

If you shrink your focus to only one type of customer, you will be able to have proof that you are an expert on that customer and their needs rather quickly. When owners know that you are an expert in their field and have confidence that you understand what their needs are they will be more susceptible to understanding that you are better than the competition and that your business knows how to solve their pain. Once you have chosen a niche, you are then able to market your business towards those potential customers. As an owner, you will want to look for clients who have a lot of pain, plenty of budgets , and lots in common with what services you provide, so that when you go to communicate your message you will be able to do so better than anyone else.

Lightning Round:

Best advice you’ve received either personally or professionally:
Never give up on your dreams, since the time I started this business I have had challenges where I had almost given up and adjust my resume again, but I talked to my mentor and he told me one step at a time and to keep learning. Because of my attitude to learning and because of that energy inside of me and the capacity to look for more knowledge and information
What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in the cleaning business we can all learn from?
Paying attention to every detail! If you use a wrong product, don’t pay attention to the details of what you are cleaning you could potentially damage a client’s property, lose money and also that client’s future business with you!
What’s one idea cleaning nation can put into practice to improve their business or their lives immediately?
There needs to be more quality mentors in the industry, there are a lot of people who are abusing the system. The cleaning industry in Nigeria needs better leaders, stronger regulations and more resources for those looking to start their own business. There are not enough mentors, or specialized janitorial schools to educate new talent and teach those just entering the business how to succeed.

Thanks again, Cleaning Nation for sharing your support and love for all we do!  If you have questions or comments about today’s episode post them below! We answer all posts.
