She’s spent the past few weeks dealing with the logistics of the split and is now unsure how to move forward. Helen spent the majority of her time cleaning while her partner was growing the business. How does she transition into full time owner without the experience of marketing, training and accounting?

In the past twenty years, I’ve come to the conclusion that I will only ever have one partner. This partner is my wife and other than that, I intend to never take on a business partner. Company owners feel they need to have a partner to thrive, yet with a partner you’re going to lose a good majority of your control.

To avoid losing control, I advise staying as a one man founding team.

The advantage of Helen’s situation is in her partner leaving early on in the business. With less than one year under her belt, she’s in a much better spot than splitting with a partner she’s worked with for over twenty years.

With that being said, the first piece of advice I have for Helen is to stop cleaning. She’s going to stop cleaning by creating two systems. The first system is a lead generation system that continuously attracts new clients. The goal is to have clients come to you, not to have you chasing them. This is going to solve her lack of marketing experience.

The second system is an employee generation system that automatically attracts new employees. Part of this employee generation system involves having all employees be capable of training new employees. This way your business can run without you on the ground and you can focus on the bigger picture. This solves the problem of having to train each employee.

Lastly, unless Helen is making over one million dollars a year she doesn’t need an accountant. She can use online resources to automatically create invoices and bill customers monthly.
