Episode 333 – Why Good Employees Leave and How to Maintain Great Employee Retention

Today we’re talking with Julian Chauk!

His question is, how do you maintain a good staff when your employees see cleaning as a temporary job? If staff are constantly leaving for better opportunities, chances are you’re struggling to keep clients happy, maintain community and get your cleaning business to thrive.

You want to ask yourself, what kind of jobs are your employees leaving for?

There are two options.

Are they leaving for jobs that are $17 an hour, when you pay $10?

If there is a better job out there with a higher pay rate, you aren’t going to win the battle. You have to change your perspective on how you experience employees transitioning into larger roles. Your cleaning company can become an incubator for helping people get better jobs down the line. If you are helping them prepare for better paying jobs with more responsibility, you can use this to inflow new employees. Your new employees don’t necessarily want to be a cleaner for the next ten years, but they do want a job that can be a stepping stone for better opportunity. Be that job.

Are they leaving for jobs that are paying the same?

If your employees are leaving for jobs with the same pay and benefits as yours, then you know you have a problem. Less than 22% of employees leave a job because they aren’t getting paid enough, while 80% leave because they are unhappy with a supervisor. If your employees aren’t happy with their day to day work tasks because of higher management, you need to recreate the foundation you manage on. If the employees aren’t happy in general, you are hiring the wrong people.

filter out the wrong people and filter in the right people by creating an employee generation system. This automated system consistently sends you A+ players so you always have a reservoir of prospects to choose from when you need an extra hand. You’ll only need to spend 3-5 hours per week interviewing prospects and zero hours trying to find them.

Once you hire staff, make sure that you are providing a healthy work environment. Show them your appreciation and create a community. If your employees are happy working for you, they won’t leave for the same paying job at a bigger company.
