Episode 481 – Take Your First VACATION in Years

If you leave your business and it shuts down because you’re gone, your income also shuts down. If this is your situation and you can’t leave to have a vacation, you don’t have a business, you have a job!  So today we are going to talk about how to take your first vacation in years. You got into this business to give yourself time and money freedom! If you are so tied to it that you feel guilty and out of control when you go, then you end up feeling like your business is more trouble than it’s worth.

False Belief: A vacation is a long weekend working at a hotel while everyone else has fun

First of all, a vacation should be as long as you need it to be in order to fully recharge!  Ideally, you should be able to get out of town and disappear for a week or two and nobody should notice your absence.  Secondly, working in your hotel room is still working! Maybe there are some big picture things that only you can take decisions on.  So if you absolutely have to work, make it only a very small part of the day. Make sure the majority of your vacation is spent enjoying your time out of the office!

False Belief: You can’t afford to take a vacation

If you don’t believe you can afford to take a vacation, really what that means is that you don’t consider a vacation a priority for the success of your business.  As a leader, you’ve got to demonstrate work/life balance. You are setting an example for your employees and your family. Making a vacation a priority, and investing in yourself, is a valuable and important expense.  The reality is you can’t afford to burn out your only real asset – YOU! If you aren’t taking care of yourself, you will burn out and your business will ultimately suffer because of it.  It is important to recharge and enjoy some downtime!

False Belief: You have to come back to piled up work and “pay” for going on vacation

You only have to come back to a mess if you are working IN your business not ON your business.  If you are doing the low value tasks like cleaning, you probably WILL have a mess or back log of things to deal with when you get back.  But if you’re working ON your business, these are the high value tasks and they aren’t time-sensitive. Your systems can keep things running while you’re out of the office.  If you’ve worked on the culture of your business, the low value tasks will be taken care of the way you want them to whether you’re there or not.

False Belief: It will take months or years to hire good employees

The reality is if you have the right beliefs and systems you can find them in 30-90 days.  You know you can’t go on vacation unless you have the right employees to keep things running while you’re gone.  You can’t effectively grow your company, either, without a healthy supply of core value employees. If you take the time to create a hiring system to find the employees you need, that system could work as quickly as a month or two!  So in fact, you could be leaving for vacation in just a few months.

False Belief: If you leave your employees will turn your business into a parking lot

If you are worried that when you leave your employees are going to screw everything up, there is a leadership issue there.  The reality it is when you leave, your employees will follow their Core Values and their true beliefs. As long as they match your Core Values, you should be good whether you’re there or not.  So if your employees act like lost sheep when you’re out of sight, this is an indication that your hiring system needs to improve. If you have employees that match your Core Values, you can leave and things will run the same way as they do when you’re there.
