We’re going to start today off with a question- When was the last time you took a vacation? Oftentimes people will go extremely long periods of time without taking any time off. One of the reoccurring traits that Mike has found in a lot of the owners of cleaning companies that he’s spoken to is that they’re hard working. This is of course a great thing, but it can lead to overworking yourself and in turn becoming less efficient at your job. Or worse, you may take vacations only to spend half your time working anyways. Making time for yourself is important, and that is why Mike is going over it in today’s blog!
Let’s start off with why it is important that you get quality vacation time. One of the biggest reasons is,it can put a strain on relationships. This goes especially for the times that you are on vacation- your family is important and you should have boundaries set to define when your family time and when your business time is happening. The goal of your vacation is to relax, which means you should disconnect from your business during that time. The way you can do that is by limiting your availability both with your customers as well as your employees. If you handle every small thing that goes on in your business, you won’t be able to focus on the bigger things, and without being able to focus on the bigger parts of your company, you won’t be able to get the systems and the framework in place for your company to manage itself even while you’re not there. This can also help your employees grow and figure out how to handle things on their own.
One of the best ways to train your employees to the point that they can handle your business while you’re on vacation, is by hiring based on core values. If your employees can justify how they handle any situation by falling back on your core values, then you know that they can handle everything while you’re either away or in a period of unavailability. If you hire people that fit in with your company’s core values, then you can trust them to make bigger decisions with the knowledge that they will always fall back on your core values. If you embrace your core values and engrain it into your culture, it will attract like-minded people who will free up your time to focus on the bigger parts of your company.
Another way you can start to train your employees to be able to handle the smaller parts of your company, is by having them start doing what all of their upcoming duties will be while you’re still there, and then once they’ve got everything down, start not showing up and see if the workflow remains the same. This not only free’s your time enough to take occasional vacations, but can also allow you to spend your time working on your company rather than in it.
