3 Important Questions About Growing Your Cleaning Business

Today we are chatting with Luke Murfitt from Integrity Cleaning!

Luke had three very interesting questions to ask me:

  1. What do you do the first TWO hours of your day?
  2. How do you incentivize people to do what you want?
  3. When do you hire someone to help you manage the company as you grow?

I was more than happy to answer these questions, especially the third one! These are all great questions and show Luke has his head in the right place. Let’s answer these one by one.

What do you do the first two hours of your day?

Personally, I get up and feed my coffee addiction. Once I get that out of the way, I’m the sharpest I’m going to be all day mentally so I focus on the most mentally complex tasks in my business.

Typically, these tasks will revolve around things that could lead to producing profit for my company for weeks, months and years to come after they’re accomplished. Anything dealing with creativity of any sort, I get it out of the way first thing because these are absolutely the most valuable tasks in my business.

Examples of these style of tasks is building out systems. Whether that system is related to how a cleaning job is performed to a high quality standard, or developing a new marketing funnel for my client attraction system, both of these things take a wide awake mind.

Not everyone is a morning person obviously, so these 2 hours of high productive time might be your afternoon. Whatever time works for you the best where you have the most mental clarity, you should be focusing on these high level tasks.

While you’re focusing on these tasks, make sure you’re completely 100% not distracted. I actually will turn my phone to airplane mode during these two hours and they’re often my MOST productive hours for the entire day.

How do you incentivize people to do what you want?

Getting your employees to do what you want isn’t always the easiest task. What I’ve found works best is to literally tie their pay to certain tasks. I’ve often talked about creating a cleaning checklist of all tasks that need to be done on a job site and having someone come in and review cleaners with that checklist.

Part of what I suggest is to tell your employees they only get paid if they do the actual tasks on that checklist. If you make it part of the job in order for them get paid, you’ll be amazed at how fast they’ll change their actions to do exactly what you want.

Of course, incentivizing people do things the way you want can be a sharp sword in of itself. Always consider what kind of consequences could follow and if the rewards will be worth it in the end.

When to hire someone to help you manage the company as you grow

This is something I’m excited to answer. Hiring someone that can manage your company is an art all unto itself. This kind of hire shouldn’t just be an old friend or family member. You want someone who is quality, someone who is talented.

In short, you want to find and nurture a rockstar in your company.

The first step to doing that is by writing a super high quality and clear job description. Write out their entire role, exactly what they will be doing and what will be expected of them.

I’ve always hated the warm body syndrome where I need help like yesterday. Because of this, if I happen across a talented individual interested in working with me, I am going to hire them. As long as I have the money to do so I’ll even hire them if my staff is completely full.

One thing you realize as you start to really level up your business is that you’re not competing for clients as much as you’re competing for solid talent to work for you.

Keep that in mind. Finding true rockstars for your company can be a difficult task, so when you DO find one, make sure to give them an offer that they’ll find hard to refuse. Even if you’re fully staffed, there is always more things you can create for these people to do until the business grows to a point where you’ll need to call upon their full work talents.
